1. Introductions and Matters Arising

Aliya Co – Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting, this was then followed by a round of introductions.

The minutes of the last meeting were agreed as an accurate record.

2. MVP Priorities and Strategic Themes

The current strategic priorities and themes are:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Infant mortality
  • Continuity of carer
  • Perinatal mental health
  • Seldom heard groups
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices – cross cutting theme

These were set prior to the maternity voices partnership launch which took place in March 2018. These priorities were set for a two year period and the partnerships intention was to review these priorities during Spring 2020.

Members were asked in small groups and then at a larger group, on what they felt the priorities should focus on over the next two years.

Members were ask to consider the existing headings, should these priorities remain the same, should any be removed and which if any new priorities needed adding.

There was discussion around different models of maternity care (the medical model and the social model), it was felt that an ideal scenario would be to have a balance from both perspectives and approaches.

There was a general consensus that the existing strategic themes were still of relevance for now and the foreseeable future. Members felt that there was scope to include an overarching theme around positive experiences for women and their families.

Action:
Workshop notes on themes and priorities to be shared at MVP Main meeting in March for discussion and to be finalised.

3. Grassroots

The overview of feedback from grassroots patient around maternity care and services was shared with the group. The Grassroots Handbook details ways in which voluntary sector partners can feed back comments and the MVP postcard question 3 could also be used to gather the feedback and intelligence.

Members then completed a sticky note exercise noting maternity care service and feedback from women and families with which they work and have relationships with.
Action:
MVP Grassroots Handbook and Summary overview of feedback attached.

26 comments/issues collated via workshop and feedback through GR channels

Next GR overview report to be shared at MVP main meeting 17th March.

4. Walk the Patch

Walk the Patch

Walk The Patch is a volunteer led program to collect direct feedback from current maternity users on the antenatal and postnatal wards of maternity units. The aim is to provide a snap shot of Womens experiences of care on a certain day on the maternity wards and can be collected from women who have birthed in a centre or on a labour ward.

Yazmin will be leading on this piece of work and will be organising a walk the patch for spring/summer and a second in autumn/ winter. The idea would be to organise one for BRI and another for AG. Shelley asked if Walk The Patch could include home births situations also as it would be good to include this area also.

Action:
YS to contact Tina Mori BRI and Sarah Munsie (AG) and MVP members and co- ordinate visits, dates and recruiting volunteers.

5. Sharing news and good practice

Masira informed that the current maternity partnership boards are currently being reviewed in line with the review of the three CCG’s.
The single CCG (formerly Bradford City, Bradford Districts and Airedale, Wharfdale and Craven) entity is proposed to begin at the start of April. The format and composition of current partnerships and boards for the time are in transit.
The proposal will be for the perinatal mental health stream to be extended to two years (it was previously three years) and the offer will be in the future be extended to include fathers.

Alison stated that Better Start Bradford were in an extremely busy period as the programme hit its five year marker (halfway through the project programme). An open invite to Tell The Story so far will be held at Kala Sangham on the 30th March.
There is also now in place three district wide strategic planning groups: Workforce, Education and Dads Groups. Zakra Yasin at BSB is the contact for more information on these.
Alison also mentioned that the Dads Programme co- ordinated by Rachel Lofthus will now be focusing on the 0 – 4 year age range.

Rachael of NCT shared her story of good practice with members following a lengthy period of campaigning around perinatal mental health checks. It has just been announced by NHS England that they will set aside an allocated amount of funding for perinatal mental health six week checks for all new mothers.
This is exciting news following the campaigning and push to reinstate this funding.

Tilly of Project 6 gave details for a training programme she is delivering around foetal alcohol syndrome and is very keen to reach midwifery teams and health professionals. Whilst women were definitely being informed on the dangers of smoking , risk of obesity there was perhaps more confusion around the recommended alcohol intake for women when pregnant, and less awareness around the effects of alcohol consumption when pregnant ( long term effects for the baby/child).

It was proposed and agreed that Tilly would deliver an interactive workshop around the theme at the MVP main meeting on the 21st July

Feedback for Bradford Doulas by Aliya was of some joint training with Rape Crisis around domestic and sexual violence.

Action:
Masira to update group when new systems are in place.

To forward Tilly information on Midwifery Curriculum Stakeholders Group sessions organised by Bradford University

Being Part of the MVP

“After going through two very traumatic pregnancies and labours, and experiencing emotional difficulties throughout, I wanted to be part of helping other parents. I found becoming a parent to be a lonely experience and felt a great level of appreciation for the level of care and support from maternity services. There were ups and downs but I have so much admiration for the professionals that have been part of my journey.

Now I’m a mummy of two wonderful girls, I’m a volunteer supporting parents and I’m a part of the MVP for Calderdale and Huddersfield which is a group of diverse and friendly people committed to bettering the maternity journey for all future generations.”

5. Grassroots

Samina Fayyaz – Engagement & Experience Officer, NHS Bradford City & District, CCG

Samina gave a quick over view of what grassroots is and where the NHS get their data from as there was concerns about
She highlighted the data they have received so far from MVP is very low, a graph was passed around the members which showed figures from April 2018 to August 2019 reflecting this. She explained that every two or five months a report is produced based on the feedback that they receive. The feedback comes in from a number of sources;

Care Opinion
Social Media health watch
CNet & Hale (engaging People’s Project)
Patient Support Team (Based in CCG’s)

All this information is put on to a system that looks and analysis the data that is received. It uses algorithms, which means it will pick up key words from any particular comments. Samina used a number of comments (these are anonymous, apart from which source it has come via and what month it’s from) as an example to explain these are the kind of things people have spoken about in regards to the Maternity Services.

She went on to talk about identifying themes and trends and highlighted some of the themes that have emerged over the April 2018 –August 2019 period. This is broken down into sentiment; positive and negative (look at both acute trust and primary care). This data is then further broken down, so one comment can fall into a number of different categories that are listed. So someone could mention staff and waiting times in the same comment (these two areas have been identified as people talking about the most)

Samina explained she was aware that the question of where the information goes, has been raised several times, she explained in the first instance it goes to the JQC (part of the CCG’s). They look at the positives and negatives, this is then filtered down to the Patient Heads of the Trusts and CCG’s. She explained as there is a vast range of different service provisions e.g. diabetes, stroke, heart disease Commissioning heads and Leads then focus on good practise and closing the triangular process.

Samina asked for a big push on the information that is fed into grassroots as it is very low. She said they were in the process of putting more info on the website.

The Group discussed more creative ways about getting feedback from mothers, i.e. Facebook page, more feedback from the wards.

Action:
YS to circulate Grassroots Summary Report with the minutes.

6. Review of the year

Liz explained her term of office will be finishing by the end of January and she will be stepping down as Co-Chair, this was a funded post and she was recruited by the CCG’s four years ago. It is currently being looked into (at a strategic level) if this will continue to remain a funded post. Liz explained the movement nationally is MVP’s have remunerated chairs in order the work is carried out effectively.

An election was carried out for a Co-Chair and Aliya was elected. We are looking into if it is possible for Aliya to step up as Chair if she may want to do so. Not quite sure as to what will happen with the post just yet, but we are in safe hands for the moment.

There is a review of the voluntary sector support at the end of March, but already questions have been raised whether this process will have finished. So we will carry on business as usual and meetings will be set for next year.

Liz said she would be stepping back but will be around if support is required. Liz thanked everyone for supporting her and the project through the last few years.Liz gave a review of the year

Please see report attached

Liz asked everyone to spend 5 minutes looking at the structure and to high light anything that is an issue or not working currently.

Please see attached activity notes

Action: YS to circulate report with the minutes.

7. Member News

LMS get some funding to support MVP and service users and it was decided at the regional MVP meeting that certain groups whose chairs were doing this completely as volunteers, without support of child care or any other support, should receive this funding instead of it being split equally across those arears that are paid.

The Birthing stories café event was a success (thank you to everyone who supported this). MVP would like to do more of these creative events. If anyone has any ideas/themes, please share and we will try to make this happen and support this.

We are still supporting the Maternity Children Young People Board, The Mental Health sub group (task & finish Group) that Masira attends on our behalf and also the LMS regional groups, there is a lot of places we are feeding into and would like for that to continue.

BIB to share information on a new piece of research regarding weight gain in pregnancy.

Lisa Wright from the CCG informed that from the 1st April 2020, new equality objectives will be agreed at the CCG. Lisa would like to share those named objectives with the partnership and keep members informed and involved in future discussions.

Engaging People Project Case Study – 6th November 2019

CNet Engaging People Project Case Study

Bradford District and Craven Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) Birthing Story Café Outcome: Better Engagement

6th November 2019

Background

MVP is an NHS working group made up of a team of service users and their families, commissioners and maternity health care providers. Originally a Maternity Services Liaison Committee, MVP was relaunched at Carlisle Business Centre in March 2018.

MVP have a minimum meeting quota of 3 main meetings per year (partner agencies including Head of Maternity and Community Midwifery teams) and also 3 meetings with Voluntary and Community Sector Partners (with attendance from parents and volunteers).

The MVP strategic priorities are: Breastfeeding, Infant Mortality , Continuity of Carer, Perinatal Mental Health , Seldom Heard Groups and Healthy Lifestyle and these were set prior to the launch and will be renewed in 2020

What we did and who was involved

The different scenarios included a planned home birth, a labour ward birth and a mother also shared her two differing birthing experiences, and a third mother shared the story of her first birth which was an unplanned caesarean in an emergency situation and then her most recent birth which was a planned caesarean birth.

Women shared their thoughts and feelings around the support they had receive from maternity service staff, also their family and friends and how discussed how their birth situations had impacted on bonding with their babies.

Outcomes

The session was attended by 18 women from a wide variety of backgrounds (some were mums, others had no children, some were from VCSO organisations , some were health service staff , two were CGG commissioners and 2 were student midwives. Ethnicity backgrounds included South Asian, White, African and Iraqi.

Three mothers shared their birthing experiences and how these had impacted on their physical and emotional health and also bonding with their babies.

At the end of the session there was an opportunity to network and women (both professional and non-professional) talked to each other about their differing birthing stories and experiences.

Comments and feedback on maternity healthcare services were fed into the Grassroots channels.

What next

Engaging People staff will continue to visit mothers and families to gather feedback and comments gathered on maternity and health services will be forwarded through Grassroots channels.

Women and families will be recruited for a Walk the Patch program in Spring 2020. This will involve collecting direct feedback from maternity users on antenatal and postnatal wards of a maternity unit , thereby providing a snapshot of womens experience of care on a certain day which will be shared with maternity midwifery teams.

Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) Voluntary Sector Partners Meeting
 Minutes

Friday 25th October 2019, 10.00am – 12.00pm at CNet

Present: Aliya Fazil (Co-Chair), Laila Ahmed (CNet), Sara Hollins (BTHFT), Rea Halstead (BTHFT), Maha Alomari (City of Sanctuary), Alison Brown (BSB), Rachael Loftus (AFC), Waheeda Ghafoor (Family Action), Masira Hans (Sharing Voices), Rachael Dennis (NCT), Judith Nevin (NCT)

Apologies: Liz Firth, Yazmin Shah (CNet) Lisa Milne (Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust) Carolyn Sadler (Bradford District Council)

1. Introductions and Matters Arising

Laila spoke about the MVP strategic plan in terms of engaging with health professionals, voluntary community sector and individuals. She explained the VSP meeting is where front line staff feed in their perceptions/thoughts around the interactions they had with individuals within the community. This then directly feeds back into the main meeting.
As part of the third strand on direct engagement, an MVP Postcard had been developed with three key questions to collect individual women’s stories and birth experiences
There was discussion around Grassroots and the handbook was circulated. Alison and Sarah raised the point that they were unsure as to where Grassroots information was fed back to at a service management level. Laila stated that all the information was collected on a regular basis by the CGG, collated into a report and that this was then shared at a strategic level with relevant commissioners and staff.

Suggestions were made about having service users attend the main meetings to feedback and add value. Laila advised MVP was launched in March 2018, The initial aim/objective was to develop the two- strands of meetings. The starting point was an email database of 4 people this is now 95. The main meeting is two hours, quite structured and very formal. Whilst both sets of meetings are open to individual women it may be unlikely to engage women, especially from seldom heard communities.
So as to capture those voices the MVP postcard has been developed with 3 key questions, these will go out across social media FB and Twitter website, and also be taken out to events. EPP team can also attend Womens groups with the postcards and collect their experiences.

Sarah asked if it would be possible for the postcards be promoted on the postnatal wards and at the hospital.

Actions:

  • SF to provide GR summary feedback report for MVP main meet
  • EPP team drop off postcards and booklets

2. Guest Speaker
Rea Halstead – Infant Feeding Coordinator – Specialist Midwife BRI
Rea fed back that her team have been working towards re accreditation and were working hard to ensure that all staff are up to date with Unicef training. The teams were wanting to provide a consistent message about infant feeding, not just breastfeeding alone. She stressed the importance of bonding and relationships for families to ensure children have balanced emotional stability in the long term.

The training was also aimed towards ensuring that midwives understood the bonding and brain development processes and that initial stage of closeness links with responsive parenting.

They were also Working with BRI ward 30/32 re-admission team to give breast feeding support

An antenatal/ postnatal drop in was set up end of July when Rea came in post. This has a fairly good attendance and good spread of antenatal and postnatal attendees. BSB and NCT Buddies played a key role in assisting and supporting women particularly in helping to manage their expectations, helpful to normalise infant feeding and, give confidence to women to breastfeed in a safe public environment.

Questions raised by the group on the content of the training at the Unicef study days. Rea explained she was currently in the process of writing this:

Day 1 – Bonding brain development and responsivity

Day 2 – Feeding (access and support)

R. Loftus and Little Minds Matters are to be involved in delivering some of the bonding and brain development training to bring it to life, add depth and value. We need to have buy-in from staff re: importance of this and as a consequence, infant feeding and responsive infant feeding will be more attuned to what women feel having bonded with their babies antenatally rather than a tick box or something thought of after the birth.

3. Strategic Theme Flipchart Sheets

Breastfeeding

Bradford Breastfeeding Buddies. – Data showing issues.

Seldom Heard Groups

Encourage dads to be more involved and integrated into maternity services.

Having an integrated approach and using community venues where possible

Single parents with no support and vulnerable children within maternity services settings, clarity on safeguarding + boundaries for professionals in terms of responsibility and accountability.

How do we identify/access those individuals falling through the net?

Pregnant women accessing support beforehand – ante-natal and breastfeeding clinics.

Sometimes a lack of informed consent due to language barriers.

Occasionally DV and cultural challenges interpreting with statuary services-thresholds etc.

Service users being afraid that there may be cost implication in accessing services. Lack of clarity around services and some anxiety around perceived charges.

Perinatal Health

Perinatal period-increase to 2 years
ACE’s increased trauma informed workforce and communities. Access to services- some venues not accessible with young children.

4. Grassroots

Laila explained Grassroots is a tool for the CCG’s which brings together feedback from local people on their experiences of health and well -being services – and is not a complaints system. The handbook/ guide for anyone working in the voluntary and community sector was handed out

Page 8 on the guide on the different ways to contribute was shared

5. Sharing News and Good Practice
Maha talked about pregnant women who have debts and are being targeted by debt collectors. She explained there is a service available for these women to assist them in becoming debt free. The service writes out to all the creditors on behalf of the women with an agreed offer of payment

Rachel and Aliya will start to look for volunteers for Walk the Patch activity at BRI Alison shared info on Better Start Baby Week 2020 and the launch event taking place on Monday 4th November at Mercure Hotel. Members were asked to spread the word. Highly recommended was a Mark Harris Talk around Dads and Babies on Tuesday 5th November.

Aliya shared that MVP was hosting the Birth Stories Café on 6th November, where three mums would be sharing their different birthing experiences.
Masira mentioned upcoming event, Resilient Communities (Better Start Bradford) on the Wednesday 6th November and Masculinity &Mental Health (Sharing Voices) on the Thursday 21st November.

Action:

  • MA to forward information for circulation. Please find attached

6. AOB
